GABI (Animal genetics and integrative biology)

General scientific orientation

Understanding and making use of genetic variability for high-performance, sustainable animal production : the scientific interests of the GABI joint research unit focus on improving our understanding of the basis of the genetic variability of biological functions and developing methods and tools for breeding and for the conservation of animal populations. The unit makes use of interdisciplinary skills in genetics, genomics, modeling, biostatistics and biology, and its activities extend from the acquisition of new knowledge to methodological innovation and transfer in the field.
The unit works in close collaboration with a number of partners. In addition to the agents of the two overseeing organizations, AgroParisTech and Inra, this unit also include agents from ENVA (the national veterinary school at Alfort) and several technical organizations, including the Institut de l’élevage (the French Livestock Institute), Allice, and the Institut français du cheval et de l’équitation (the French Horse and Equestrianism Institute).
The unit is also a member of the multidisciplinary Sciences Animales Paris-Saclay (Animal Sciences Institute ; www.saps.paris).

Fields of research

The unit is composed of seven research teams and a technical platform team. Research is organized around four scientific axes :
Genetic variability and trait variation
♦ Phenotyping of animals and their products
♦ Genetic architecture of traits
♦ Identification of causal variants
♦ Functional analysis of the polymorphisms identified

Dynamics of genes, genomes and populations
♦ Organization and regulation of the expression of genomes and epigenomes
♦ Study of microbiomes
♦ Characterization and management of animal genetic resources
♦ Population genetics-genomics
♦ Territorial registration of populations

Prediction of performance
♦ Prediction of the transmission of traits over generations
♦ genetic improvement, genomic selection
♦ Prediction of lifetime phenotypes at the scale of the individual (search for biomarkers of physiological states or responses to disturbance)

Modeling
♦ This transverse axis contributes to the other three axes but also includes its own methodological research on the transmission of traits (statistical genetics), the evolution of allele and haplotype frequencies and the biology of systems
