PRODIG (Research Pole for the Organisation and Dissemination of Geographic Information)

UMR (Joint Research Unit) AgroParisTech, CNRS, IRD, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Université Paris-Diderot, Sorbonne Université

General scientific orientation

This unit aims to improve our knowledge of the interactions between development nd environment. The goal is to understand today’s world, the North and South, in terms of its spatial and territorial dynamics. The unit carries out fundamental and applied research. Its research themes, tools, skills and know-how, together with its association with a constantly evolving set of national and international partners, make it possible to respond to the demands of sponsors and decision-makers at various levels.

Fields of research

The work of the unit is based around four research themes and a valorization activity :
Changes in territories, productive processes and globalization
♦ Connecting territory changes with the productive processes they support, which, in turn, contribute to changes in their composition
♦ Analysis of the transformations of urban and rural territories in a context of globalization, according to the forms of governance associated with these changes and their relationship to development
♦ Improving our understanding of the dynamics specific to each spatial level (state, region, town, territory) and likely to influence the implementation of development
projects and policies

Risks, vulnerabilities and territory management
♦ Identification of the theoretical and practical links between development and environment
♦ Improving our understanding of the social and environmental vulnerabilities of particular territories

Political geography of resources
♦ Analysis of natural terrestrial or marine resources, properties, and of the strategies of the various actors concerned, whether public or private, and the relationships between them
♦ Studies of the networks constructed to exploit/transport these resources and the resulting conflicts/solidarity
♦ Improving our understanding of the territorial configurations associated with the exploitation or protection of resources

Observations and modeling of changes
♦ Establishment of high-quality technological scouting activities and updating of methods for collecting, processing and representing geographic information
♦ Development of new methods of observation and modeling dedicated to the analysis of changes over different time scales, together with analyses of the evolutionary dynamics and trajectories of territories

Valorization activities and the diffusion of geographic and urban information
♦ Organization of geographic scientific knowledge in all its forms, to render this knowledge accessible
♦ Diffusion of geographic and urban information, notably that generated by the unit, via digital tools
