Territories (Territoires)

UMR AgroParisTech, INRAE, Université Clermont-Auvergne, VetAgroSup

General scientific background

Territoires is a multidisciplinary research unit with researchers in Social Sciences (geography, economics, political science, management) and in biotechnical Sciences (agronomy, zootechnics).
Members of the unit share the objective to analyse how local actors develop (or not) policies and innovation in an economic, social, and ploitical changing context in order to implement adaptative strategies of development.
The central idea is that there are multiple configurations (local and regional) and trajectories (individual and collective) leading to a co-existence of “models” and strategies within territories. This notion raises questions about capacity for action and about the design and implementation of public actions. The unit studies practices, in terms of actions adapted to the diversity of models and of schools of thought, with a view to the continual adaptation of these practices. In addition, approaches for supporting actions and change in territories must also be developed in the fragile areas in which the stakes are very high for innovation.

Fields of research

The unit is organized into four groups :
Melting – Territory-based husbandry models : interaction and organization
♦ The aim is to describe, understand and support the transformation of husbandry systems into more sustainable forms, taking into account the interactions between the different “types” of farms already present in territories. The principal approach adopted in this work is to consider farmers, stakeholders from the world of agriculture and the links between these actors and territories.

Datif – Dynamics of fragile territories
♦ The aim is to reflect more deeply on the scientific and political construction of fragile territories and to contribute to the characterization of these territories and the analysis of their trajectories.

APoG – Collective action, public policy and governance
♦ This work focuses on coordination between public and private actors, particularly its collective and territorial dimensions. The aim is to improve our understanding of the diversity of coordination mechanisms, processes and trajectories of collective actions and public policy, and their effects on territory dynamics. The use of new instruments for action in territories is also studied.

AVEC – Supporting change
♦ This work focuses on ways of supporting change in territories. The participants help the various stakeholders to deal with change, through participatory activities, research-training-action programs, support for reflection and through the analysis of such actions.
